A museum with lots of space for exhibits. Lots of room that is unused.They have a particularly wide rage of cultural exhibits from the all continents including tribal art and ritual items. The range of Egyptian relics was impressive with many mummies, statuettes other hieroglyphics in a dedicated mezzanine floor level. They have a reasonable display of clocks and astronomical instruments as well some pieces of rockets. The live feed from the International space station was down when I attended The natural history side is less impressive with the "Bug world" being quite disappointing with a few beetles and stick insects and when I visited. Many of the aquariums were out of action. There were a few dinosaurs fossils but these were mainly casts and not originals. The mineralogy and geology exhibits were very poor with scant explanation of their origin or composition or context. The web site claims a number of important geological collections are held there. Few if any from these were on display. As usual a fairly expensive cafe (2 for a pot of tea) and a gift shop selling tacky gifts was present. There was a planetarium for which there was a fee. I was unable to try this. On the positive side there are lots of lifts and ramp access with toilets and changing rooms on all five floors and a cloakroom at the entrance.Lots of facilities such as separate rooms with activities for schools are available with several such groups there when I visited. Some were better behaved that others with one group of 10-14 being particularly annoying with no interest other than in the more explicit tribal figures!Visiting off season I may not have seen the museum at its best. Worth a look at if in Liverpool but not to travel far from unless tribal items and Egyptian artifacts are your interest. The museum is next door to the Walker Art gallery which is worth a visit in its own right.
Love it! We visit here every time we come down to Liverpool. My only gripe is that when schools are in the activities are sectioned off so the public cannot use them. It seems over time there is less and less to see though, for example the fish section used to be full of fish in every viewing window. Now only 2 are being used instead of about 6. My 5 year old really looks forward to seeing them.
What a gem of a place, went to see terracotta army and spent an unexpected day enjoying the rest of this museum. It is clearly dated but if you spend the time to explore it proved to be very interesting, especially the rooms with the pull out draws. Staff helpful and polite. If you have a genuine interest to learn then this is for you. Fantastic wheelchair access too.
Free culture and knowledge! A great place to take the children on their days off . There's so much to see and learn for them and for you . Museum is very clean. Considering there is no entrance fee ( most people ignore donations , which in fairness are optional ) people running this place are making big efforts to mentain it in the condition it is and always make an effort to bring something new . Real mummies for example ! I mean this is really impressive ! You can spend a few good hours in there and learn and see so much . Highly recommended!!
What a lovely museum. It has a lot of great history. I think is one of the most beautiful museums in the city. Is an interesting place to behold. I always spend some time here during my leisure hours. It gives me inspiration.
